Curriculum
At Surprise Lake Middle School we teach the 6 Traits of Writing and our focus for writing instruction is the use of elaboration as well as three essays: Narrative, Expository and Persuasive. In January all students at SLMS will take a writing assessment that we use to inform our instruction mid way through the year.
- Students will learn about the 6 Traits of Writing (Ideas, Organization, Word Choice, Voice, Sentence Fluency, and Conventions) and learn how to improve these traits in their own writing through targeted practice and editing excercises.
- Students will learn how to write using more elaboration and interesting details such as anecdotes, examples, quotes, descriptions, and definitions.
- Students will learn how to write an expository, narrative, and persuasive essay.
